Phonics

Curriculum - Phonics

What is phonics?

Phonics is a method for teaching reading and writing the English language by developing learners' phonemic awareness. This is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate phonemes—in order to teach the correspondence between these sounds and the spelling patterns (graphemes) that represent them.

In Foundation stage, year one and year two we use phonics.

In Year one the new phonics check is completed. To prepare the children for the check they are all set in groups according to their ability and letters and sounds is taught. These are fun engaging sessions where we use lots of resources to help pupils learn and remember their sounds.

Throughout key stage one and two letters and sounds is taught and again children are put into sets. They are regularly assessed and placed into appropriate groups to move them on.
